Project 2: Planning a focus group or co-design approach to
This project asks you to think about a potential design project (e.g. for GD Workshop 1 & 2), create a research question, develop a plan for a focus group or participatory/co-design session, and reflect on how this method works as a way to create knowledge.
To apply the focus group or co-design research method to a potential workshop design project
To reflect on the ways that participatory qualitative research produces knowledge
To prepare a topic for workshop and aid with the selection of a course instructor
Refine or Change your RESEARCH DIRECTION
REFINE or CHANGE the direction that you developed in Project 1. Remember that this is the topic you would like to pursue in your GD Workshop courses next year.
Although it will be most beneficial to choose a topic that you can focus on for the rest of the individual project assignments in this course, you do have the option to refine, redevelop or completely change the one you already developed. Remember that some shifting or refinement is inevitable and indeed useful.
To refine your direction you can think of the elements that are missing from your original statement. You can also evaluate whether you still feel it is an interesting direction. For instance, does it still produce more interesting questions for you?

Develop your RESEARCH QUESTION specific to this method
DEVELOP a research question to specifically guide the creation of your focus group or co-design process.
WRITE a concise question (max 30 words) that pinpoints exactly what you don?t know but wish to find out through this research.
CONSIDER the direction articulated in Step 1 by thinking about the key audiences, stakeholders or communities that are affected or impacted by your topic.
LIST the different audiences affected (list 3 to 7 groups)
LIST what knowledge you might want to gain from these groups (list 1-3 items).

DEVELOP an outline for your focus group. Include timing, and a description of each question or activity. (1 page)

If you chose PARTICIPATORY/CO-DESIGN

DESCRIBE what barriers exist for participation and how will your logistics work to overcome these? (150 words)
DEVELOP an outline for your participatory sessions. For each session, outline the goals and outcomes to take you through from concept to completion. (1 page)
