1. Answer the following:
I am reminded of a situation within my former place of employment. When I was employed as a department manager within a non-profit organization, we realized that employees were less than productive because they were spending much of their time chatting via chat rooms, instant messages, personal email, or social networking sites. At one point, we passed an organization-wide regulation that prohibited employees from using work time to conduct personal business. Employees generally adhered to the guidelines. However, they used the organization’s computers and electricity to conduct personal business on their breaks and after work hours.
Class: If we were to set aside the issue of legality, is this behavior ethical? Does an employee’s decision to use the company computer for personal use outside of work hours (during breaks and after work hours) shed light on personal ethics of the employee? Why or why not?

2. Expand on the following:
My personal ethics are based on my personal moral code. As a born again Christian, I have modeled by behavior based on Biblical standards. I do not steal, lie, use drugs or alcohol, or bear false witness against someone. I work diligently, I am faithful to my husband and my family and I represent myself in a Godly way in everything I do that is work related. Similary, Johnson (2015) states “…character traits as justice, humility, optimism, courage, and compassion, make wise choices, and master the ethical challenges of their roles.†As all or in part of these traits are indicative of ethical part of the character of someone with a high level of ethics.” Although these traits are great ethical traits that are imperative to the individual, preventing them in part can be a little dis alarming. Ethics are balances out by those enforcing them and those choosing to follow the parameters set out by them.
I do not see many differences in how I lead others and how organizations desire for me to lead. As an example, I am the Executive Director for an activity center for area adtuls downtown. There are a lot of things that I need to do but only work 12 hours a week. I have see individuals work outside of their paid 12 hours and volunteer 39 hours back. This is a mixed lot of integrity. The worker puts in the hours because they like to finish what they started. However, the Center cannot pay them the extra hours given as employment hours but are also not willing to try and create an easier schedule because of the words used.
The way I have chosen to keep everything in perspective is that I work 3 days a week and stop when my hours are met. The work I leave behind will take care of itself. My main responsibility is me and my family. If I continue putting work first they will suffer and that does no good for anyone. It is important to have borders established before they overrun ahead in your life.

3. Expand on the following:
The most significant similarities in my personal ethics and the literature I’ve read on ethics is that leaders set the tone for the organization, and the survival of an organization weighs heavily on the ethics of the leadership (Kottke and Pelletier, 2013). They also state that when behaviors are unethical, the unethical behavior can shape the norms of the organization. When leaders can be looked at to behave in ethical ways, their behaviors are emulated by their followers. The biggest difference in my personal ethics, and the literature I’ve read, is that sometimes I believe that lies need to be told, and information needs to be held back on certain occasions, because there are times when the state of mind of followers do not allow for hearing the truth. I am almost ashamed to admit that, because it is as though I am admitting to believing in unethical behavior, however, I have personally experienced situations where followers were so set against or for something that would devastate the organization, Their state of minds can be only thinking about their benefit because they do not have the same level of commitment as leaders do, therefore, there are times when followers cannot be trusted to do what’s right with information. Honestly, I hope that this viewpoint changes over time, but it is what it is at this point. The similarities in my personal ethics and the literature empowers me in that I can read about the predicted outcomes that are favorable because of my ethics. The differences make me unsure about my ability to lead because I don’t always believe that it is right to tell the truth. I am curious if that viewpoint will change over time, especially in this class. It could be that my ethical beliefs different from the literature could simply be because I don’t know anything better or I’ve been afraid of the possible outcomes and conflict should I always choose the “right†and ethical decisions.
